Portable Appliance Testing

Businesses in Ireland are required to carry out Portable Appliance Testing (PAT Testing) regularly, according to the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations, SI 299, 2007.

PAT Testing ensures that all appliances on your premises are safe to use and do not pose a risk to employees or anyone else who comes into contact with them. Portable Appliance Testing is a physical inspection of all portable electrical appliances (any electrical appliance which can be unplugged and moved to a different location), including plugs and cables, in your workplace or premises. PAT Testing must be carried out on an annual basis by qualified persons according to Irish Law.

Periodic Inspections and Testing

Electrical must be properly maintained, to avoid injury, casualties, or property damage. A suitable regime for periodic inspection and testing of electrical installations is a legal requirement to reduce the possibility of these incidents occurring.

The requirement for periodic inspection testing and reporting is outlined in the Safety Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations, which states that electrical installations must be tested by qualified personnel, any defects found during the testing must be rectified promptly to avoid danger, and a report of the test should be completed by the person carrying out the test.
